Demolition of the existing powerhouse located at the Ford Rouge Site. The Ford Rouge powerhouse explosion was a tragic industrial accident that occurred on February 1, 1999, at the Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Michigan. The explosion took place in the power plant responsible for supplying electricity and steam to the entire 1,100-acre facility, one of the largest and oldest industrial sites in the world. While the powerhouse had been a critical part of the Rouge Complex since its completion in 1921, providing energy not only to the plant but also to the surrounding community, the 1999 explosion marked a turning point in its history. After years of service and subsequent modernization, the powerhouse was eventually demolished in 2025, closing a significant chapter in Detroit’s industrial legacy.

This additional plant space was necessary for Ford meet the customer demand for the new all-electric F150 Lighting truck. The original Battery Electric Vehicle building at the Rouge Complex, completed in 2022, was expanded by this project on the north, south, and west sides to accommodate additional process equipment.
